Ciarán Dublin Staff Relay Blog
Posted on May 16, 2012 by Ciarán Nolan
Hi Folks,
David Palmer is a personal friend of mine and has been a great supporter of Headway. He has attended a number of Headway functions over the years and ran a 5km leg of the 25km relay race last year. David has kindly agreed to help us out again this year and be part of our relay team. We're really thrilled to have him on board because David is big into fitness, afterall he is a fully qualified fitness instructor! He'll be making sure the Headway team perform at their best on Thursday week. I had a chance to catch up with David and put a few questions to him before the big race.
Ciarán's Dublin Staff Relay Training Blog
Posted on May 09, 2012 by Ciarán Nolan
Hi Folks,Welcome to my training blog, and for all your support in the run up to this year's Dublin Staff Relay Race. The race will take place on Thursday May 24th in the Phoenix Park. Dublin's Psychology team ran the race last year, we did really well, our aim was to raise awareness of brain injury, awareness about Headway and of course raise some much needed funds while we were at it, and our goals are the same this year too. Over the next two weeks I'll be posting how the team is doing on the build-up to the big race. We'd love your feedback and support. I'll be talking to my team-mates, Cillian, David, Jonathan and Shane. David is a friend of Headway and a personal trainer, so I'll be posting his thoughts on the lead up to the run also.Being very honest, my training to date has not been great, however, I did manage to hit the gym yesterday and ran 6km and this morning I was up bright eyed and bushy tailed and did a spinning class, I always wondered why they called it spinning, today I found out, I was in a complete spin by the time the class ended 45 minutes later! I'm planning to do another class on Friday morning, so watch this space! All the best for now,Ciarán

Brain Awareness Week Update
Posted on March 07, 2012 by Richard Stables
This week IS Brain Awareness Week - our chance to raise awareness of Ireland's 30,000 people (at least) living with the long term consequences of brain injury. After Sunday's fantastic Afternoon Tea with Headway launch event with Clodagh McKenna, (you can read about it here) yesterday the theme turned political with the keynote conference "Securing resources for Neurological Services in a Recession".
You can find out more about what the various Health system representatives said at the Neurological Alliance site.
Also we hosted a coffee morning in Carlow yesterday (pictured), a joint event run in conjunction with Brainwave, the epilepsy society. Thanks to everyone who supported us there.

Headway Service Users - Advocacy in Action
Posted on February 23, 2012 by Richard Stables
Service users and family members from Headway in Cork, Limerick and Dublin were in attendance at Leinster House today to remind politicians about the importance of community services for people with neurological conditions.
Coordinated by the Neurological Alliance of Ireland, the event was an opportunity for TDs and Senators to meet people with brain injury and other neurological conditions and hear about how Irelands health system depends on organisations such as Headway to provide vital rehabilitation services.
Thanks to all the Headway clients and family members who helped to bring the message to our politicians: Tom, Robert (pictured, from Headway Limerick), Kay, Phil, David, Alan (Headway Cork) and Michael (Headway Clondalkin).

Politician's recovery sparks interest in Rehabilitation
Posted on January 09, 2012 by Richard Stables
US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords recovery from brain injury after being shot in the head a year ago is sparking interest in brain injury in America and elsewhere.
Giffords was a victim of a shooting last January at a local supermarket near Tuscon, Arizona when she was meeting the public. She was critically injured by a gunshot wound to the head. She was later brought to a rehabilitation facility in Houston, Texas, where she recovered some of her ability to walk, speak, read and write. Her recovery progressed to the extent that last year she was able to travel to the Kennedy Space Center where she was able to watch the launch of the final shuttle mission.

New found talent

Martin Stelcik suffered a cerebral haemorrhage in 2010. Since then he has developed an artistic flair he had never previously possessed. Martin's stroke left him with right sided weakness and he has determinately developed his technique and skills with his left hand. He is currently doing a FETAC art course with the VEC in Mallow where he is experimenting with different mediums, developing his own style.
The photo shows Martin with the Christmas cards he has made recently for family and friends. The Nativity scene is from one of these cards.
