Vincent Power and Brian Carroll did the Cork City half marathon on the June bank holiday weekend for Headway. They raised 467.31 euro and the guys look rightly pleased with themselves! Thanks from all of us here at Headway for helping the cause of people affected by brain injury.

Ireland Fans Squad wins the Carling Fans Cup

Summer is here, and with it the running season has been in full swing. We've been delighted with the level of support this year for runners in our keynote events, the Flora Minimarathon in Dublin and the Cork City Marathon. We'd like to say a huge thanks to everyone who ran, and everyone who supported the teams. When we have a final figure for the sum collected we will let you know, but the signs are looking good.

Thanks also to the You Boys in Green who raised over 1200 Euro from their Carling Cup fans match. See our news item here

Malcomson Law

Who says that the spirit of generosity is dying? Despite these recessionary times we are still touched by the efforts that people go to in supporting the cause of services for brain injury. We recently received cheques from two fantastic companies, who both have put heart and soul into raising over 8k each for Headway Services.

The team at PHD (www.phdnetwork.com) pictured here, bottom, together with Headway Service users Miriam Holland and Tom O'Donnell and Headway Staff raised their contribution through a tag rugby evening.

The staff and partners at Malcomson Law (www.mlaw.ie) pictured, top, raised over 8k for Headway during a year of fundraising activities in 2010.

Table Quiz Success

Posted on March 15, 2011 by Martina C

Well since my last blog there has been a lot going on. Myself and Deirdre from Headway decided to run a fund raiser on brain injury week. We held a quiz in the Round Towers club in Clondalkin.

We put a lot of work into it doing up leaflets posters getting the info put into the Towers newsletter, answer sheets and my Husband Denis did up all the questions, getting raffle tickets and of course getting the spot prices for the raffle. People were very generous and we had a Hugh amount of spot prices.

Alan's Blog

Posted on March 04, 2011 by Alan O'Connor

My name is Alan, I've been attending Headway for three years. Recently I have been getting the bus into town from Headway instead of a taxi so that I can be more independent. At the start I was a bit nervous in case something would go wrong, for example if I got off at the wrong stop or got on the wrong bus. At the beginning a staff member from Headway travelled with me to give me the confidence and reassure me that there was no need to worry.

A Road to Somewhere

Posted on February 25, 2011 by Jim Kennelly

A road to somewhere:

It could be worse was what was said,

But that didn't make it better,

I was down and bored on a narrow bleak road,

Then I saw a road to somewhere (headway),

A way to have a life again.

The effect of brain injury on me

Posted on February 15, 2011 by Martina C

Today I want to talk about the effects of brain injury on myself.

I feel at the start that I have been robbed of the important thinks in your life, such as the memory of my children and them growing up, doing every day things like cooking, hovering, using the washing machine and things like that. We take these things for granted in everyday life.

The next thing was reading, I could write and spell some words but I could not read. Again this is an essential thing in your life for reading bills prises in shops, letters and so on. So just imagine going into a shop and not being able to do this.

Planning the next trip...

Posted on February 14, 2011 by Tom's Blog

Today is my first day back after the Christmas holidays, I had a great Christmas and then we went on holidays to London for 5 days and Portugal for 12 days. All my life I would have always wanted to visit London but never got the chance and I was pleased to find the people were very nice there. We did a number of things, from doing a bus tour of London, a view of the changing of the guard, a walk of the sights of Jack the Ripper's murder spots and a walk around Abby Road and the area around where the Beatles were in the 60's,which was great. Then we headed to Portugal which we call our second home. After all the snow in Ireland it was great to get a bit of sunshine as the weather was great. We're home now and planning the next trip.
