Jim's Blog #2
Posted on June 25, 2010 by Tom's Blog
Hi Jim here.
A lot of positive things are happening for me at the moment. Over the months of April and May I completed a Neuropsychological assessment. The feedback I received was from both the psychologist and the staff in the Headway day services was very good. It has really lifted my spirits and my mam is also delighted!! I feel like there are more doors open to me know. It feels great to have options. My goal at the moment is to get voluntary work with people with disabilities. Hopefully with the National Council for the blind or the Irish Deaf Society. I'll keep you updated with any progress.

My name is Jim Kennelly and I am 37 years of age. I have been attending Headway Day Services in Lucan for the past 8 years. I am currently working on my autobiography on a Thursday afternoon and at home. I am hoping to post quotes from my book and what I have been up to via my blog on a monthly basis. I am looking forward to starting my monthly blog's as I feel this may help people get a better insight an understanding of an acquired brain injury. It is my goal in life to enable people to become more aware of what an acquired brain injury is and how the effects of it can change people's lives.
My Blog - by Cora

I am a 38 yr old student. 4 Years ago I was on my way to work one morning and suffered a stroke like episode. I have benign Intracranial Hypertension. The residual effects of the damage are evident only to me and those around me who know me very well. I have lost a lot, but gained even more.
For me this disease is the kick start my life needed. I never used to appreciate my life or abilities, now, every achievement means more, even the normal things. Today I remembered to get milk fromt the shop. WOO HOOOOO
Introducing...the Brainiacs
Posted on March 30, 2010 by Martina C
Hi everyone we are three trainees from Headway and we have called ourselves the Brainiacs - due to our head injuries not our intelligence! This isn't to say we're stupid. We just have some difficulties such as memory, speech, fatigue and motivation problems. This blog is about coping with everyday situations, challenges and looking at the past. But first, we would like to introduce ourselves. These are our stories...

Dealing with brain-injury and prolonged sick leave from work isn't easy, unless you are rich and/or managing a breakdown very well. D'you know what I mean?
Issues are complicated by the fact that many brain-injured people don't want others (acquaintances, colleagues, employers etc.) to know about their injury. Some are afraid that others will consider them to be "thick" or "retarded". Some experience a lack of confidentiality in dealing with their private stories, thereby adding a pain-in-the-butt to their pain-in-the head syndrome.
Speedy's Blog - Anxiety Moans

I am heading off on a holiday next week. I have been looking forward to this for so long. Yet, now that it is about to happen, I find myself surprisingly overwhelmed by anxiety in ways that I never imagined could happen.

The Emotional Stuff
Experts tell us that brain injured people can suffer emotional side-effects, for example, becoming depressed or angry. And I've met many people going through these stages of recovery. I considered it peculiar at first that this didn't seem to happen to me. Yes, I was very anxious after my illness, gob-smacked at the suddenness of the hemorrhage and fearful of its implications. But I was so relieved to have made an initial recovery (i.e. it didn't kill me) and with the help and kindness of friends and family, I felt overwhelmingly thankful.
