Nativity Scene by Martin Stelcik - Nativity Scene by Martin Stelcik
Nativity Scene by Martin Stelcik

Martin Stelcik suffered a cerebral haemorrhage in 2010. Since then he has developed an artistic flair he had never previously possessed. Martin's stroke left him with right sided weakness and he has determinately developed his technique and skills with his left hand. He is currently doing a FETAC art course with the VEC in Mallow where he is experimenting with different mediums, developing his own style.

The photo shows Martin with the Christmas cards he has made recently for family and friends. The Nativity scene is from one of these cards.

The Brain in Season

Posted on November 18, 2011 by Richard Stables

brain scan

BBC Radio 4 are currently running a whole season of programmes about the Brain. It covers 5000 years of understanding (and misunderstanding) of what the brain is and what it does from the ancient Egyptians to recent advances in neuroscience. It takes in the myths and fallacies about the brain and what that tells us about the culture of the times.

Find out more about the series at http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/radio4/2011/11/radio_4s_brain_season.html

Many of the programmes in the series will be available as podcasts which you can download from the BBC website ( at this link)

Helen_moran - Helen Moran Campaigning for Awareness
Helen Moran Campaigning for Awareness

We come across many people who have helped to raise awareness about brain injury in lots of ways. One of the most dynamic must surely be Helen Moran, who has been an active campaigner for brain injury awareness in Scotland and internationally through her own blog at http://brainiac-brainaware.blogspot.com/

Helen's exploits range from abseiling down the Forth Bridge (twice!), dressing up in pyjamas for whole week and petitioning the Scottish parliament.

Helen is just one of the many individuals who have decided that more people need to become aware of the hidden effects of brain injury. If you have done something to help raise awareness, we would love to hear from you, just send us your story to info@headway.ie

John says:

"Hey Folks,

On Thursday morning myself and 4 friends are setting out to cycle from Bordeaux across the mighty Pyrenees to Barcelona, it's a journey of over 750km which we hope to do in 7 days. We will have a support van which we'll take turns driving but each of us will still do over 600km.

James Cracknell appeals to cyclists to wear helmets

Posted on July 21, 2011 by Richard Stables

James CracknellWe are really impressed with this new cycling safety campaign from our colleagues at Headway UK (see www.headway.org.uk)

On 20th July it's exactly one year since James Cracknell was seriously injured in a cycling accident in America. His helmet saved him.

James has made a short film to encourage others to wear cycle helmets. To show your support, pass the film to your friends and most importantly, when you're out cycling, use your head. Use your helmet.

Summer is here, and with it the running season has been in full swing. We've been delighted with the level of support this year for runners in our keynote events, the Flora Minimarathon in Dublin and the Cork City Marathon. We'd like to say a huge thanks to everyone who ran, and everyone who supported the teams. When we have a final figure for the sum collected we will let you know, but the signs are looking good.

Thanks also to the You Boys in Green who raised over 1200 Euro from their Carling Cup fans match. See our news item here
