Politician's recovery sparks interest in Rehabilitation

US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords recovery from brain injury after being shot in the head a year ago is sparking interest in brain injury in America and elsewhere.

Giffords was a victim of a shooting last January at a local supermarket near Tuscon, Arizona when she was meeting the public. She was critically injured by a gunshot wound to the head. She was later brought to a rehabilitation facility in Houston, Texas, where she recovered some of her ability to walk, speak, read and write. Her recovery progressed to the extent that last year she was able to travel to the Kennedy Space Center where she was able to watch the launch of the final shuttle mission.

In an article in the Chicago Tribune Health section puts the focus on recovery from brain injury and in particular the recovery of speech and communication. The article quotes research by Northwestern University which indicates that recovery from aphasia (a disorder of speech and communication due to brain injury) can occur throughout a person's life and does not halt after an initial "window" of opportunity.
