Gearing up for European Brain Month
Posted on April 23, 2013 by Richard Stables
You might be aware that Ireland is currently hosting the presidency of the EU Council. This is coinciding with the first ever European Month of the Brain to last for the month of May. It's an unprecedented opportunity for all of us to show what we can do for people affected by brain injury and other neurological conditions. It's also an opportunity to make a few sobering points about Ireland's performance in neurological services compared to the rest of our European colleagues. As the Neurological Alliance of Ireland has pointed out, we continue to lag far behind most European countries when it comes to investing in and developing services for people with neurological conditions.
Lobby Day in Leinster House - 27th Feb
Posted on February 25, 2013 by Richard Stables
The Neurological Alliance of Ireland, (www.nai.ie), the umbrella group for charities providing services to people affected by neurological conditions is organising a lobby day in Leinster House on Wednesday. Following the successful launch of the neurorehabilitation manifesto, the day aims to focus political attention on much needed services for the thousands of people affected by neurological conditions such as brain injury and others.
As Ireland prepares to host European Month of the Brain in May 2013, as part of events for its EU presidency, the NAI will highlight this country's track record when it comes to neurological care services.
Same Me, Different Me
Posted on November 21, 2012 by Richard Stables
Same Me, Different Me is the title of a song recorded by another of the peer support "Harbour" groups run in Headway Dublin.
The inspiration for the song came from the group members' own experience of living with brain injury and coping with its challenges.
The song was produced by the group with the help of Kenn Davis of Craftzone (www.craftzone.ie) and was entered it into the "Better Together" competition, gathering over 700 votes!
And we have now released the song as a CD single, which you can purchase in our online store for €5 plus delivery.

Headway client and brain injury survivor Pat Kearney suffered a Brain Aneurysm which left him with ongoing difficulties. He talks about his experience of attending Headway and the importance of motivation in an interview with Phoenix FMs Michael Ryan and Connor Williams. Headway's Caroline Earley also speaks about accessing Headway services.
"If Headway wasn't there, I could be sitting at home all day, every day"

Una's Story
Posted on October 25, 2012 by Richard Stables
Our latest addition to our personal stories section features Una McGettigan, who survived a fall from a horse which resulted in a serious head injury. During emergency surgery, her family were told she had a ten percent chance of survival. But survive she did, and she talks to Caroline Brennan from Giant Leap Productions (www.giantleapproductions.ie) about her experience and her journey of recovery following the accident. http://www.headway.ie/stories/unas-story-audio/

The Headway "Harbour" peer support group have been working on an awareness raising video project. They enlisted the help of a certain famous Irish sporting legend, Mr Packie Bonner who visited the group and contributed to the movie. We are all eagerly awaiting the finished product which will help towards bringing greater awareness to Headway and brain injury in Ireland.
Group members pictured are (L to R) Louise Gilsenan, Mark McDonagh, Packie Bonner, Eddie Byrne, Louise Dolan, Jennifer Larkin and Harley the dog.
Watch this space for information on the upcoming release of the video.

Headway would like to extend a big thank you to the employees and management of the Irish Stock Exchange (www.ise.ie) who recently raised funds for Headway Limerick. The organisation hosted a table quiz with a raffle and spot prizes which took place recently in Cassidy's pub, Camden St. Dublin. A great night out was had by everyone and it raised a fantastic total of €5000!. Headway are very proud to have been selected by the ISE's charity committee as one of their beneficiaries, and the funds will go towards providing new rehabilitation centre for the Headway service in Limerick.
Thanks for helping to bring positive change in the lives of people affected by Acquired Brain Injury!
