Dealing with brain-injury and prolonged sick leave from work isn't easy, unless you are rich and/or managing a breakdown very well. D'you know what I mean?
Issues are complicated by the fact that many brain-injured people don't want others (acquaintances, colleagues, employers etc.) to know about their injury. Some are afraid that others will consider them to be "thick" or "retarded". Some experience a lack of confidentiality in dealing with their private stories, thereby adding a pain-in-the-butt to their pain-in-the head syndrome.

The Emotional Stuff
Experts tell us that brain injured people can suffer emotional side-effects, for example, becoming depressed or angry. And I've met many people going through these stages of recovery. I considered it peculiar at first that this didn't seem to happen to me. Yes, I was very anxious after my illness, gob-smacked at the suddenness of the hemorrhage and fearful of its implications. But I was so relieved to have made an initial recovery (i.e. it didn't kill me) and with the help and kindness of friends and family, I felt overwhelmingly thankful.
