From Experience...This Helps
This advice arose out of the Mens' Peer Support group in our Cork Service in October 2010. They compiled the list of the most important things that help following brain injury.
1. It's a long road to recovery but you will see improvements. Things do get better.
2. Don't feel alone or worried. Seek out and make as many links with relevant agencies and supports as possible. There is help available.
3. Be willing to accept support when needed. You may need assistance today but another day you will be the one helping someone else.
4. Accept that having a brain injury can be confusing and difficult at times - like 'being put in a circle and asked to pick a corner'. Learn as much as you can about your own injury and better ways to manage your difficulties.
5. Have an open mind to suggestions from professionals (even if you disagree) - they have they have seen it all before and are offering suggestions in your best interest that may help.
6. Remember that every little bit of progress is a step in the right direction no matter how big or small. Acknowledge how far you've come to date.
7. Learn from others who have sustained an ABI. You can learn a lot about acceptance, adjustment and understand more about your own recovery from sharing experiences.
8. Accept support from family when needed.
9. Try to stay positive - remember the glass is half full.
