Carers Week - A Big Success
22 Jun 2010
To mark this year's National Carers Week, seventeen family members of people with brain injury took advantage of the invitation to a "Date with Wellness" in Headway, Dublin. As well as the opportunity to offer each other support and advice for coping with the consequences of brain injury, the participants benefitted from sessions on relaxation, meditation and stress management and were treated to some muffins and a cream tea on a glorious sunny Saturday morning.
The feedback we received about this day was very positive, so thanks to all who took part, and thanks to Ciarán, Sonya and Sheila for putting on such a lovely morning.
For those looking after someone with brain injury in Dublin, we also have a monthly carer support group.
In Kilkenny, a group of ten family carers came together for a coffee morning and flower arranging event in Langton's Hotel. The event was arranged by the Carers Association with support from Headway, as part of Carers Week to celebrate the great work done by carers.
Two local politicians also attended and got a chance to hear about the work of both organisations, as well as the challenges of being a family carer. It was a chance for carers to meet in a supportive, friendly environment, and everyone was able bring home their flower arrangements when it was over.
It was a great morning, with lots of laughter and learning. Thank you to Pat from the Carers Association, and Catherine from Headway, for organising the event.
In Cork we had a special family/carer education workshop. We looked at the overall impact ABI has on the family as a whole and how people have coped with this. We also followed on this topic this week by looking at care-giver stress and appropriate ways of managing this. Additionally, family members were also given details of events taking place within the Cork region to mark carers week.
Many thanks to Sandra, from Headway, who ran the workshop. Thank you also to the staff at Bishopstown library who kindly facilitated us on the day and also allowed us advertise carers week on their notice board.
